Project Scope

The Port Authority of NY & NJ (PANYNJ) has decided to replace the existing Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) and its associated facilities with a more efficient, higher capacity facility to address the continued growth of the region especially in mid-town Manhattan. The main goal is to get interstate buses off city streets and make space for curbside passenger pick up as well as bus storage. The bus terminal is estimated to open in 2031.

The new terminal design is a ground-up replacement that includes a five-story bus terminal, 160 passenger gates, a 1 million (est.) square foot bus storage, erect a staging building between 9th and 10th avenue, and construct a bigger set of bus ramps directly to and from the Lincoln Tunnel. The design also includes infrastructure for the future construction of four high-rise towers over portions of the new bus terminal that could help fund it, through sale of air rights and payments which is non-existent today. 

The project will be live in 2028 and construction will begin first on the main terminal. Core structures for four proposed towers to be built above the bus terminal would be included in the construction to be built out later. Three of the towers will be commercial towers and one will be for residential and mixed use. The new terminal added interstate buses that now pick up on city streets. Currently the terminal conducts 250,000 passenger trips on a weekday and with existing bus traffic and travel that number is predicted to increase dramatically by 2040.
