NYCDEP North River WWTP Contracts NR33 & NR35
The North River Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) is located in the Borough of Manhattan and operated by the City of New York Department of Environmental Protection. The plant receives and treats wastewater from residents and businesses on the west side of Manhattan, from Bank Street in Greenwich Village to Manhattan’s northern tip. Designed for an average flow of 170 million gallons per day (MGD) and a peak wet weather flow of 340 MGD, the plant provides secondary treatment through a step feed aerated activated sludge process. The plant’s treated effluent is discharged to the Hudson River, while the stabilized sludge is transported off-site
The West Odor Control System, designed by Pirnie-Baker and installed under Contract 27 in the early 1990’s, services the Primary Settling Tank ventilation system. This system is comprised of four wet scrubbers and twelve dual bed carbon adsorber units. During Contract 33 the following work will be performed:
- Installation of new motorized FRP dampers on all scrubber and carbon adsorber inlets and outlets.
- Elimination of bypass dampers between scrubber discharges and adsorber inlet plenum.
- Installation of new recirculation pumps.
- Replacement of existing scrubber media with Jaeger Tri-pack media.
- Replacement of all existing chemical metering pumps and associated piping as well as PH and ORP probes and controllers.
- Replacement of existing sprays nozzles within the scrubbers.
- Replacement of existing carbon in carbon adsorbers with new carbon.
- Construction of new plenum and installation of new fans for North Odor Control System.
In addition to the upgrading of the existing odor control systems under Contract 33, a number of process improvements are included in the contract:
- Extension of Baffle Walls within the Aeration Tanks
- Installation of new waste sludge line from RAS splitter box.
- Replacement of existing Dissolved Oxygen (DO) Control System.
- Replacement of existing 18-inch dumps valves for aeration tanks.
- Replacement of aeration tank diffusers and piping including new drop-legs and diffuser grid piping.
