Nassau County DPW WPCP Phase I, Storm Water Pumping Station, East Rockaway, NY

Techno provided Resident Engineering and Inspection services as a subconsultant to Gannett Fleming.

These services were provided in connection with the Flood Protection Phase I – Stormwater Pumping Stations project at the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant, in East Rockaway, NY. Under this contract two stormwater pump stations were built at the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). The principle features of this project included the following:

A perimeter barrier was constructed around the plant to provide protection from future flooding events (post Superstorm Sandy in 2012). The facility has two stormwater outfalls (North and South) that were closed during flood events to protect the plant, therefore stormwater pump stations are required to divert stormwater that would otherwise leave the facility via gravity.

The construction work also included building a new 38 MGD pump station shall to alleviate flooding in the South Subcatchment and an 8.4 MGD pump station was similarly be designed for the North Subcatchment. The two pump stations were integrated with the existing stormwater infrastructure. The 38 MGD pump station incorporates four submersible pumps installed within a below grade wet well with a footprint of 58 ft by 28 ft. The 8.4 MGD pump station incorporates three submersible pumps installed within a below grade wet well with a footprint of 32 ft by 20 ft. Each pump station includes a separate, above grade Motor Control Center (MCC) building. The MCC Building for the South Pumping Station is elevated above the pre-established 18.25 flood level and the MCC Building for the North Pumping Station was designed to be flood proof.
